The
Hawkwood Community Garden provides the community with a gathering place where people can grow their own fresh produce and get to know their neighbours. All gardeners are welcome, both beginners and experienced; we all learn from each other. Each garden member is asked to take on responsibility for one common area task for the season. For example, caring for a perennial bed, watering fruit trees (apple, sour cherry, pear) and bushes (hascap, goji, saskatoon).Beyond the practical benefits, the garden encourages community spirit. The garden's trees, perennials and other features help to enhance the park. We involve schools and other community organizations and are always happy to have community members visit the garden. Occasionally we have social events, depending on volunteers to organize.
Community members are welcome to use the picnic tables and benches at the garden site.
The garden is located on a former baseball diamond off Hawkwood Hill. The site includes more than 30 raised garden beds, a cedar garden shed and a beautiful pergola. Art work by students at Hawkwood School and St. Maria Goretti School transforms the one-time backstop.
