The Community Garden is a resident driven initiative with over 20 participants working to bring this project to life. The Community Garden successfully completed its first year of planting and harvest in 2023, and we are looking forward to a second year with the addition of a second terrace of gardening beds. We will also have our first accessible garden bed for community members with mobility supports who want to participate. Updated August 2023.

Our garden membership is made up of a number of familes in Montgomery. It is communally maintained, and we all share in the harvest—we do not have individual plots. The garden is in a fenced 100x70 ft area. We organize regular work bees so members can socialize and learn from each other. We try to plan at least one larger garden event during the season. Garden beds may be rented by anyone, and we are one of only a few gardens in Calgary with no residency requirements – members simply provide their rental fee and at least 15 volunteer hours working on common areas. There are more than 20 fruit trees including apple and sour cherry and fruit shrubs including Nanking cherry and saskatoon. In 2007, founding members of Community Crop built 35 garden beds. Funding was provided via donations from the South Calgary Community Association and participating gardeners. The High River Garden Society is the governing body for 2 gardens: McLaughlin Meadows and Riverside Community Gardens. These gardens are on public land owned by the Town of High River.
